Nebraska Takes Weekend Series Against Maryland

Nebraska traveled to College Park, Maryland to take on the Terrapins this weekend. It was a pretty good series for the Huskers, with us winning two out of the three games. Although game one didn’t go our way, games two and three went much better helping us secure this victory. Let’s look at how we were able to win this series.
Game One
Game one was not a good game for us, as we struggled both offensively and defensively. Nebraska started off the scoring with a solo homer in the first and adding two in the second. This brought our lead to 3-0. Marilyn quickly answered, getting three runs off of three hits tying the game at three in the bottom of the second. In the bottom of the third, Marilyn took the lead by getting two runs across. Both teams scored a run in the fourth, bringing the score 6-4. Nebraska added one more in the seventh, bringing us within one. Marilyn put up a five spot in the bottom of the seventh and added one in the bottom of the eighth, ultimately winning 12-5.
This was a difficult game for us, both offensively and defensively. Offensively, we had nine total hits, but only five runs. We had opportunities to score more runs but unfortunately couldn’t take advantage of these chances. As for our pitchers, bullpen, and defense it was a rough day all around. Our pitchers gave quite a few free passes with a lot of walks and a few hit batters. The Terrapins were able to take advantage of these passes, which helped them get the victory in game one. Fortunately for us, games two and three went much better.
Game Two
Game two went a lot better for our Huskers. Like game one, we started off the scoring. We got one run in the top of the second and added one in the top of the fourth. Nebraska added three runs in the top of the fifth bringing our lead to five. The Terrapins got their first run in the bottom of the seventh. The Huskers added one in the top of the eighth and Marilyn added one in the bottom. However, Nebraska tact on one in the ninth winning 7-2.
This was a great response from the Big Red after our struggles Friday night. We were efficient on both sides of the ball and had a good day all around. The Huskers had nine total hits which is a pretty productive day. Pitcher Ty Horn had an excellent day on the mound pitching six shut out innings. I was extremely impressed with this performance from him and hope to see similar performances in the future. As for the rest of the defense, we had a pretty good day, only allowing eight hits. We only had one error compared to Marilyn’s three. Overall, it was a good game for us with our ability to take advantage of free passes offensively, and productive pitching along with defense.
Game Three
Game three was an excellent game for the Huskers. Nebraska got off to a hot start plating six runs in the top of the first. This included a grand slam. This was followed up by three runs in the top of the second and two runs in the top of the third. This brought Nebraska’s lead to 11. In the bottom of the fourth, Marilyn got five runs with four coming from a grand slam. Nebraska immediately responded in the top of the fifth with a five spot of our own. This brought the score to 16-5 Huskers. From there, it was all Huskers. We added four runs in the sixth and one in the seventh, ultimately winning 21-5 in the seventh due to the run rule.
This was a fantastic game for Nebraska with everything going our way. Offensively we had 19 hits and did a great job taking advantage of free passes from Marilyn. Our grand slam in the top of the first was a great start to the game and gave us a lot of momentum throughout the rest of the contest. Our pitchers also had a productive day, only allowing five runs and five hits. This was an impressive performance from the Big Red. It was the first time since 2019 that we scored more than 20 runs in a game. Overall, it was a great game all around and an awesome way to end the weekend.
Overall Thoughts
Overall, this was a very efficient series for Nebraska. Although game one didn’t go our way we were able to turn things around in games two and three. I was impressed with the pitching and defense we saw in the last two games. We saw a lot of great things which will hopefully continue in the final stretch of this season. As for the offense, it was a pretty good series with a lot of sharply hit balls. I saw a lot of improvement from our last game, which will hopefully continue as the season goes on. It was a great way to respond after our shut-out loss last Tuesday. Hopefully we can take the momentum from this win into our next game. We return home for a Tuesday night game against Kansas City Tuesday night. The game is set to start at 6 PM.
