Nebraska stayed in state on Wednesday as they traveled to Omaha to take on the Mavericks. It was a close game at times, but some pitching mishaps made it difficult for our Huskers. We had a pretty good day offensively, but some defensive mistakes ultimately cost us this game. The Huskers lost by a score of 11 to 9.
It was another bad start for Nebraska as Omaha started the game with two runs in the bottom of the first. Fortunately, for us, we quickly responded in the top of the second. This came off of three hits, including a three-run home run, which put Nebraska up 3-2. We added one more run in the third and the Mavericks added two. This tied the game at four heading into the fourth inning. The Huskers exploded in the top of the fourth adding five runs off of six hits. Nebraska led by a score of 9 to 4. In the bottom of the fifth, the Mavericks got four runs across bringing them within one. From there, Omaha tapped on one more in the sixth and two and the seventh. The two in the seventh came off of a two-run homer, which ultimately gave them the lead and the win.
This game felt similar to Tuesday’s game with the crooked number being put up in the first inning. Although Nebraska kept it close for some of the game, we were unable to claw our way back into it in the end. It was a difficult day for our pitchers along with the bullpen. We gave Omaha several free passes and just couldn’t get out of our own way. The pitching staff also used multiple arms once again, which caused there to be no rhythm or flow. We also had two errors along with multiple walks and hit batters, which really hurt us. Offensively, the Big Red had a pretty productive day with 16 total hits. This was an impressive performance from the Husker offense. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t enough. One thing that stands out to me was our inability to take advantage of opportunities. We left the bases loaded a few times and couldn’t capitalize in critical moments. We also struggled to do this on the defensive side. Our pitchers had multiple opportunities to get out of innings unscathed but were unable to do so. These are things we will need to fix soon as we have a quick turnaround. Up next, we return to Big Ten play. Nebraska faces Rutgers in a three-game series in Lincoln starting on Friday. Game one is scheduled to start at 6 PM.
