Nebraska Falls to In-State Rival Creighton

Nebraska faced our in-state rival, the Creighton Bluejays Tuesday afternoon. It was a close game for the majority of the time but some missed opportunities and pitching miscues made it a difficult day for our Huskers. We had a pretty productive day offensively but made a few too many mistakes defensively which gave Creighton a chance to get this victory. Nebraska lost by a score of nine to five.

It was a nightmare of a start for the Big Red as Creighton started off the game with a bang. They scored three runs in the top of the first. Fortunately, for us, we quickly responded in the bottom of the second with three runs of our own tying the score at three. The Bluejays took the lead back with one run in the top of the fourth. Once again, we tied it up. This came in the bottom of the fifth from a pinch-hit RBI double. In the top of the seventh, Creighton added two more runs bringing the score 6-4 Bluejays. We added one more run in the bottom of the eighth. Creighton got three runs off of three hits in the top of the ninth and we were unfortunately unable to add any more runs ultimately losing this game.

The Huskers had a pretty efficient day offensively getting nine total hits. We did a good job keeping it close for a lot of the game, but unfortunately, we couldn’t capitalize in critical moments at the end. As for our pitchers and defense, there were a few costly mistakes that really hurt us. One moment that really stood out to me was the top of the first inning. This crooked top of the first really set the tone for this game which was not a good start for us. Nebraska’s bullpen also struggled at times and gave Creighton opportunities which they were able to take advantage of. Husker pitchers walked nine total Bluejay hitters and also had a batter get hit by pitch. Although we were in it for much of the game, these mistakes ended up costing us the opportunity to get this victory. Hopefully Nebraska can turn things around for our second midweek game. Up next, Nebraska travels to Omaha to face the Mavericks with first pitch scheduled for 6 PM.
