Nebraska Sweeps Wichita State in Two-Game Series

The Huskers stayed in Lincoln to start off the week with a two-game series against Wichita State. With the first game being held on Tuesday night and the second Wednesday night. This was a good series for our Huskers, with us winning both games. We performed well in the bullpen and did pretty good on offense. Let’s look at each game and give some overall thoughts.

Game One

The first game was a pitcher’s duel through the first four innings. The Huskers got one run in the first inning to start off the scoring. It was a couple of quiet innings until the bottom of the fifth when we got three hits and three runs bringing the score to four to zero. In the top of the sixth, Wichita State got a solo home run. We increased our lead with one run in the bottom of the seventh. The 8th inning was by far our best inning with us adding five runs to our lead. Wichita State did not get any more runs, and we won by a score of 10-1.

This was a great performance from our pitchers. Our pitchers had 14 total strikeouts, which was a key factor to us winning this game. Our offense also did pretty well with some key hits in big moments. This was a great way to start the series.

Game Two

Game Two was a lot closer than Game One. Our offense got off to a hot start with us getting four runs in the bottom of the first inning. This came from only two hits. Wichita State quickly responded with two runs of their own in the top of the second. Both teams added one run in the fifth, bringing the score 5-3, Huskers. Wichita State added one more run in the top of the eighth but were unable to get any more runs. We won by a score of 5 to 4.

This game was a little more difficult than the first one. Although it looked as if we were going to take this one early, we allowed Wichita State to stay in the game. We kept it close and were never able to pull away. Offensively, we started out great but slowed down after that crooked first inning. As for our bullpen, we did pretty good, but did allow it to get close at the end. However, we managed to get the victory.

Overall Thoughts

Overall, this was a successful series for our Huskers. Our bullpen looked strong and did a great job.  Offensively, we did pretty good, although there’s still room for improvement. In game two, our solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning helped us get the win. Although Wichita State added one more run in the eighth, this deficit was too much for them to come back from. I was impressed with the effort and grit that this team showed throughout both games. Our pitchers did phenomenal in the first game and were able to hold up at the end of the second game even when it got close. After being on a four-game losing streak, we are now on a three-game winning streak. Hopefully we can keep this momentum going. Up next, we take a trip to the West Coast for a week stay, where we will take on three different programs starting with UCLA on Friday.  GBR
