Nebraska traveled to Lawrence, Kansas to take on the 22nd ranked Jayhawks Tuesday night. It was a back-and-forth game for our Huskers with the Jayhawks tying it up a few times, but we were ultimately able to pull the upset. Although we had some pitching struggles at times, we were able to work around them. Offensively, we had another productive day, which helped us get this win. Nebraska won by a score of 7-5.
The game started out good for us with us getting the first run of the game. This came off of an inning in which we had no hits. Our lead off batter got hit by a pitch and ended up scoring the first run of the game in the top of the first. Kansas answered in the bottom of the first with a run of their own. We responded in the top of the second with two runs, including a solo homer to take the lead 3-1. The Huskers added one more in the fourth. In the bottom of the fifth, the Jayhawks tacked on three runs tying the game at four. This came off of an RBI double and a two-run home run. It was a quiet few innings until the Big Red put up a two spot in the top of the eighth. The Huskers added one more in the ninth ultimately getting this victory.
This was a pretty good game for our team, especially since we beat a ranked opponent. Offensively, we had a very productive day and did a great job responding when Kansas got close. As for our pitchers and Bullpen, it was not our best outing, but we were able to stop them when we needed to. We used multiple different arms and were a little inconsistent all night. One thing I’d like to see us work on is limiting the number of free passes we give the opposing team. Nebraska pitchers gave up nine total walks and this is an area we will need to improve and as this season goes on.
Overall, I was very impressed with this performance. Our Huskers are continuing to improve on the offensive side, which is great to see. The crooked numbers put up by our offense in the top of the second and eighth innings made a big difference. As for our pitchers and Bullpen, although we had a hard time tonight, I believe we can improve and turn things around. Hopefully our Huskers can carry this momentum into our next series. Up next, Nebraska travels to Iowa to take on the Hawkeyes in a three-game series starting on Friday. First pitch is set for six o’clock Friday night.
