It was a great midweek series for our Huskers as we swept Pepperdine in our second series of this West Coast trip. We were very efficient, both offensively and defensively. Our offense got big hits when we needed them, and our defense got big outs when necessary. Our pitchers also did a great job getting strikeouts in critical moments. Let’s take a look at both games.
Game One
Game one started off pretty good for our Huskers, with us putting up the first run of the game in the top of the first inning. We then added to our lead with three runs off of five hits in the third. After adding one more in the fourth, Pepperdine got their first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. We responded in the sixth, with four runs off of two hits. This brought our lead to 9-2. Pepperdine quickly responded with a solo home run. They added three more runs in the bottom of the seventh bringing the score 9 to 6, Huskers. Although we allowed it to get close, we ultimately prevailed, winning 9-6.
This was a great game, both offensively and defensively for our Huskers. Offensively, we got some big hits in big moments and our offense did not become stagnant like they had in previous games. As for our defense, we were able to get outs in crucial moments and didn’t allow them to score when they had a chance. Our offense had 12 total hits while our defense held their offense to only six hits. This was an impressive performance all around and a great way to start the series.
Game Two
The second game started off similar to the first, with the Huskers getting the first run of the game in the top of the second inning. We then added one run in the third and two in the fourth. Our two runs in the fourth came off of back-to-back home runs. In the bottom of the fourth, Pepperdine got their first two runs of the game. The Huskers added two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. This brought our lead to 7-2. Pepperdine got a solo home run in the seventh and one in the eighth. We added one run in the eighth and three and the ninth, ultimately winning 11 to 4.
This was another great performance from our Huskers. Our offense got big hits when we needed them, and our defense, along with our pitcher, kept their offense from tightening up the score. Our bullpen also did a great job when called upon. This was an important victory that will hopefully help us going into our next game.
Overall Thoughts
Overall, this was one of the best performances us Husker fans have seen from this team thus far. The offensive productivity that we saw in this series is something that we’ve been looking for all season. It was awesome to see, especially given how much we have struggled lately. We had 20 total runs in this two-game series compared to our last series where we only had eight total runs. This is a massive improvement that hopefully will carry over into our next series. As for our defense, they also did a great job and were consistent in not giving up a ton of runs and getting outs when we needed them. I was impressed with this team and their ability to turn things around after getting swept in a three-game series last weekend. Hopefully we can keep this momentum and win our last series on this West Coast trip. Up next, we take on USC in a three-game series starting on Friday.
