Northern Iowa Preview: Building Confidence and Clarity

I know this seems like a bit of a letdown game, but this game against Northern Iowa is an important one. Sure, it is expected to be a blowout, so I do not mean important for the win/loss category. But, it is very important how we perform. I want to see an offense that comes out after halftime and still fires out with aggression. This night game is right stuck in between a heated rivalry game and the 400th sellout and conference play, so it would be easy to overlook. However, I view this as a chance to keep building into the team we want to see.

UNI Offense
Northern Iowa has an offense that is going to try and run the football. This season, they’re leaning heavily on their standout running back, Tye Edwards, who has been impressive with his ability to break through defenses and make significant gains on the ground. I have found it interesting that although this team is so run-heavy, several of the offensive assistant coaches are Air Raid disciples. The Air Raid is typically associated with a pass-heavy approach, but its principles can also influence running strategies by creating mismatches and using angles and space for the run game. This style of running the football prepares us for Big Ten play (minus the athletes) and plays right into the strength of this defense.

UNI Defense
The Northern Iowa defense has largely been tested by teams that haven’t exactly pushed them to their limits in terms of talent, so I’m genuinely excited to see how our offense performs against them. This game presents a valuable opportunity for us to gauge how effectively we can exploit their defensive weaknesses. There has been some chatter among fans regarding the effectiveness of our offensive game plan this season. Some fans have raised concerns about our play calling and execution, particularly with our tight ends. This game against Northern Iowa could serve as a crucial test to address some of those doubts. We have the chance to clarify our game plan’s strengths and possibly refine areas that need improvement. Getting clear answers to these questions before we enter conference play is essential. The upcoming conference games will undoubtedly present a different level of challenge, and a strong performance now could provide valuable momentum and insights. This game is an important step in making sure we’re fully prepared for the heightened competition that lies ahead. This matchup is not about securing a win but about using it as a benchmark to assess our offensive capabilities and make any necessary adjustments. I’m looking forward to seeing how our offense rises to the occasion and how we address the questions and concerns that have surfaced among the fanbase.

Keys To WIN
I think they keys to win are the same as usual, but I would like to see some things as keys moving forward. Firstly, generating more takeaways is crucial. By forcing fumbles and intercepting passes, we not only create more opportunities for our offense but also put additional pressure on our opponents. Takeaways can shift the momentum of the game and provide short fields for our offense, which is especially important once we get to Big 10 play.
Secondly, I’m eager to see us capitalize on explosive offensive plays. We have the talent and the potential to make big plays, whether through long passes or breakaway runs. By stretching the field and taking calculated risks, we can keep the defense on its heels and create mismatches that our playmakers can exploit. Implementing more dynamic and aggressive play calling will not only keep our opponents guessing, but also give future opponents more to gameplan and worry for.
Lastly, playing a clean game of football is essential. This means minimizing penalties, and executing our game plan without unnecessary mistakes. Clean play ensures that we’re not giving away free yardage or opportunities to our opponents. It also reflects discipline and focus, which are crucial for maintaining momentum and controlling the tempo of the game. Avoiding self-inflicted errors will help us stay ahead and execute our strategies more effectively. We clearly had an issue with that in the second half of the last game.
