It is finally here! Our first game preview is here on RED-Zone Reflections! In these previews, we will take a look at our opponents schemes, some key players, our keys to win this one, and make a score prediction. This will be a fun game, and I am beyond thrilled to be in Memorial Stadium this weekend surrounded by fellow die-hards! Let’s get into it, Nebraska vs UTEP.
UTEP OFFENSE
This season, UTEP’s offense is set for a dramatic overhaul under the new coaching staff, ushering in a completely fresh and dynamic approach. The Miners’ offense is undergoing a significant transformation, evolving into a high-octane Air-Raid, Hurry-up system. This new offense is centered around maximizing the number of plays executed in a short timeframe, with a strong emphasis on spreading the field and launching aggressive aerial assaults. The Air-Raid offense, which will define UTEP’s game plan, is all about utilizing speed and creating space to exploit defensive weaknesses. With the team now under the leadership of new head coach Scotty Walden, who previously led Austin Peay, fans can expect a radical shift in the offensive style.
Walden has made a bold commitment to UTEP supporters, vowing that the offense will snap the ball every 12 seconds, creating a frenetic pace designed to keep defenses on their heels and create scoring opportunities. This approach was showcased during a high-tempo spring game, where the new offensive scheme proved its potential by amassing an impressive 537 yards. The spring game highlighted not only the speed of the play-calling but also the effectiveness of the new system in generating substantial yardage. At Austin Peay, Walden’s offensive strategy was highly successful, featuring one of the nation’s most efficient passing games. His previous team ranked 14th in total offense, with a balanced attack that included a functional ground game to complement the aerial assault.
The shift to this new offensive philosophy represents a complete about-face for UTEP’s football program. Walden’s introduction of the Air-Raid offense is not just a change in strategy but a signal of his broader vision to revamp the team’s culture and performance on the field. As part of this overhaul, Walden has brought nine offensive transfers from his previous institution, including key players such as quarterback Skylar Locklear and running back Jevon Jackson. These transfers are expected to play pivotal roles in implementing the new offensive system. However, the offensive line will face its own set of challenges. It will feature an entirely new starting five, marking a period of adjustment and potential growing pains. This inexperience up front could be a critical factor as they step into Memorial Stadium this Saturday. The offensive line’s ability to adapt quickly to the new system and protect the quarterback will be crucial to the success of UTEP’s revamped offensive strategy.
Overall, the integration of Walden’s Air-Raid, Hurry-up offense signifies a bold and exciting new chapter for UTEP football, with the potential to significantly alter the team’s offensive dynamics and game-day performance.
UTEP Defense
The UTEP defense will need to make significant improvements from their 2023 performance in the run game if they hope to be competitive this coming Saturday. The Miners are slated to deploy a variation of the 3-3 stack defense, a scheme that is likely to play into our favor. The reason I see this as a big advantage for the Cornhusker offense, is they see a better version of that defense every day in practice and are ready for the millions of wrinkles it can throw at you. UTEP’s defensive line will be bolstered by the return of top pass rusher Maurice Westmoreland. Alongside him, Missouri State transfer Devin Core is expected to play a significant role on the opposite side of the line. While UTEP may lack substantial bulk in the interior of their defensive front, they do have seasoned veterans in Sione Tonga’uiha and KD Johnson. Both players bring experience and mobility, providing a solid foundation for their defensive scheme. However, UTEP will be looking to fill significant gaps at linebacker following the departure of Tyrice Knight, who led the team with an impressive 140 tackles last season. The responsibility now falls on Dorian Hopkins, a transfer from Tulsa, to anchor the linebacker corps from the inside. His extensive experience will be crucial in leading the defense and making key adjustments. Additionally, Gardner-Webb transfer Tray Dunson is expected to contribute significantly as a dynamic playmaker positioned behind the line, adding an extra layer of complexity to UTEP’s defense.
KEYS TO WIN!
The keys for Nebraska this week appear straightforward: focus on making big plays on both sides of the ball and set the tone for the season by solidifying their offensive identity. On offense, the team must prioritize executing explosive plays that not only put points on the board but also build momentum and confidence. This involves capitalizing on every opportunity, whether it’s through a precise pass from Raiola, a powerful run, or a play-action that catches the defense off guard. Effective communication and execution among the offensive line, quarterbacks, and receivers will be essential to sustaining drives and scoring efficiently. Defensively, Nebraska needs to concentrate on creating turnovers and disrupting the opponent’s rhythm. By applying consistent pressure on the quarterback, and tightening up coverage, can shift momentum in our favor and maintain control of the game. Nebraska can demonstrate their strength and adaptability early in the season by showing resilience and quick recovery from any setbacks. Bad things happen in every game, even if you win 100-0, but the ability to rebound strongly from missteps and adjust accordingly will be crucial.
Establishing a clear and dynamic offensive approach will be vital for success, as it will define the style of play and set expectations for future games. This balanced combination of offensive firepower and defensive dominance will be essential in building a solid foundation for the rest of the season. Nebraska can position itself as a formidable contender and lay the groundwork for a successful campaign with a big game to open the year.
